Taking the description of the Avar period settlement recently investigated at Csanádpalota- Országhatár as his springboard, the author discusses various issues in the research of the early Avar settlements of the Hungarian Plain. Addressed in the study are the distinctive traits that can be of help in identifying the period’s settlements in this region. The greatest difficulty in this field of research is the almost complete lack of wheel-turned ceramic wares and the uncertainties in the dating of hand-thrown pottery.
